THE STRAY BIRDS

CONFIRM U.S. FALL TOUR

AMERICANA MUSIC FESTIVAL SHOWCASE CONFIRMED FOR SEPTEMBER 18 AT THE LISTENING ROOM IN NASHVILLE

FOLK ALLEY PREMIERES TITLE TRACK “BEST MEDICINE”

FULL-LENGTH STUDIO ALBUM
BEST MEDICINE OUT OCTOBER 21 ON YEP ROC RECORDS

“…clearly these are players with chops, songwriters with a fierce command of their craft,”—NPR Music

I stumbled upon The Stray Birds in Raleigh last year.  I say stumbled because I’d just found an excellent cafe** in Raleigh during the Wide Open Bluegrass festival and the band was playing right outside.  Now I will have the opportunity to catch them again, just about twelve months later, when I head to Nashville this September.

The critically acclaimed trio will embark on a U.S. fall tour in support of its second full-length album Best Medicine.  The tour will begin on September 18 in Nashville at the Americana Music Festival and Conference, with stops in Philadelphia, Duluth, Boston, and New York City, among others – full list of dates below.

In advance of the release on October 21 on Yep Roc Records, the first single, “Best Medicine,” premiered at folkalley.com.

Recorded at Stonebridge Studios in Leesburg, VA, the album was co-produced by the band and Stuart Martin and features twelve tracks, including ten original compositions and two traditional songs, “Pallet” and “Who’s Gonna Shoe.”

Formed in Lancaster, PA in 2010, The Stray Birds consists of Maya de Vitry (vocals, guitar, banjo, fiddle, piano), Oliver Craven (vocals, guitar, resonator, fiddle) and Charles Muench (vocals, bass, banjo).

All classically trained and roots music-raised, the trio has spent the last several years honing their sound and touring extensively, including live performances on NPR’s Mountain Stage, Philadelphia Folk Festival, Kerrville Folk Festival and Falcon Ridge Folk Festival.  Their Borderland EP was released in 2010, followed by the eponymous full-length debut The Stray Birds in 2012 and the Echo Sessions EP in 2013.

Chatham County Line – New Release

Tightrope

Available May 20 2014

Yep Roc Records

Yep Roc Records has announced the release of Tightrope, the sixth studio album from the Raleigh NC-based four-piece Chatham County Line.  Available May 20 2014, Tightrope follows 2010’s winsome, soulful Wildwood and the career-spanning concert album and film undertaking Sight & Sound which was released in 2012 (see Michael Podrid’s cover shot above).

I first noticed Chatham County Line through their 2008 release IV (as good a name as any given it was their fourth release).  It was I felt a very impressive outing and I particularly liked the fact the traditional bluegrass sound was blended with some excellent, personal and profound song-writing, rather than the traditional ‘grass formula.  This hit home to me even further when I was lucky enough to catch some of their set as part of the Wide Open Bluegrass festival in their home town in 2013.  Here is a track from IV.

Tightrope was born out of a year’s worth of intense focus, during which the band examined their own legacy while carefully honing new material.  All the while, the band’s four members – Dave Wilson (guitar), John Teer (mandolin, fiddle), Chandler Holt (banjo), and Greg Readling (bass, pedal steel, piano) – welcomed spontaneity and the sometimes palpable will of the songs themselves into the process.

“At the end of the day,” Dave Wilson says, “you really want to write songs that have a reason for existing.  For Tightrope, we worked together very closely on every decision and every word and every bit of everything to try to make it fit.  We want every song to be on the greatest hits or the live album.”

Recorded at Sound Pure Studios in Durham, NC and produced by Wilson and Chatham County Line, Tightrope reportedly benefits from an unusually rich, resonant sound that blends each member’s contributions into a powerful, dynamic whole.  The poetic insight of the album’s eleven original songs is grounded by Chatham County Line’s ongoing commitment to classic stringband instrumentation.
